In the book, None Shall Sleep, by Ellie Marney, the character Simon demonstrates traits that a sociopath would have such as being disorganized, impulsive, having minimal emotional connection or empathy, and using force to assert power. This is shown through the files and investigations that Emma and Travis look at on Simon. Comparing Simon’s personality to the traits of a sociopath allows us to analyze how he compares and if he fits the description of one. The first trait Simon fits into is that sociopaths are usually sporadic or disorganized. This quote from the text allows us to see how Simon wasn’t very organized at killing and never really planned how he would do it, showing his sporadic behavior. He often killed in groups which showed he didn’t care about not getting caught, this was just something he enjoyed doing, proving that he wasn’t very organized and just wanted the thrill of the kill. The second trait Simon checks into is that the majority of sociopaths have very minimal emotional connection and don’t often feel empathy towards others. This is shown when they are talking with Simon and the only person he has some sort of connection with is his sister, who he cares about, furthermore, he killed a police officer for no reason while being arrested for his murders. One piece of evidence to support this is “‘Simon Gutmunsson was arrested for a series of murders between 1978 and 1980 in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont. During the arrest, there was a standoff, and unfortunately one of the Marshals on the scene was attacked. He died later in the hospital’” (Marney, 51).
