Polyatomic ions, also known as molecular ions, are charged chemical species composed of two or more atoms covalently bonded or of a metal complex that can be considered to be acting to a single unit. When the surface waters are rich with these materials, they can cause algae to grow, which completes with other organisms for light and other nutrients.
