Conformity and Nonconformity in Society Many societies try their hardest to ensure the total conformity of their citizens, whether it be through incentives or by creating fear. POSITION PAPER ON MENTAL HEALTH STIGMA 1. The Air Force should do more to eradicate the stigma associated with airmen who seek help and receive mental health care. Mental health treatment has carried a significant stigma in the general public and among military members. The functionalist perspective argue that society provides us with norms or guidelines (Leon-Guerrero 2014). There can be shown a difference of the way people expect to behave when drinking. According to Caetano, Clark, and Tam, people who lack norms to control their behavior, they are likely to purse self-destructive behaviors such as alcohol abuse (Leon-Guerrero 2014). For instance, doctors warn about the dangers of alcohol use and even advertisers promote the use of alcohol and the affects. Yet we still drink no matter what the causes are.
The business cycle and the economy ebb and flow in sporadic, unpredictable trends; however, the decrease in societal health that accompanies an economic downturn is predictable. If health deteriorates, so does mental health. While economic struggles are unavoidable, mental health struggles are not. This leads to the question: what can be done to solve the negative impact that poor economic conditions have on mental health? There are those who take mental illnesses seriously and those who do not. Mental illness does not have a set definition and its importance is widely varied. Sometimes, the way that people from certain cultures, different socioeconomic statuses, and different educational backgrounds view mental illness or mental illnesses in general can affect the way that one individual sees their own symptoms of mental illness and others who are mentally ill. In histories past, mental illness was looked at much differently than it is today.
In this world where people are separated yet also joined together for many different reasons such as racial, economic and social issues.
