In her book Nanberry, Jackie French portrays colonial life as a very confusing and perplexing time for both the Indigenous Australians and the White British Settlers, albeit in different ways. With the Indigenous Australians confused by the sudden invasion of the white settler (ghosts), and the British Settlers becoming confused by the new sights, smells and culture of ‘Sydney Cove’. Through the characters of Nanberry, Surgeon White and Bennelong, the viewer is shown just how confusing their life was at the time of the first settlement in Australia. Nanberry is one of the main characters in French’s book, and is a prime way through which she portrays colonial life as perplexing and confusing. Nanberry was born into, and partially raised by an Indigenous Australian family, however he was adopted by Surgeon White at the tender age of eight or nine.
Pascoe is still able to provide a genuine and straightforward narration: one which does not ignore the real issues of displacement and dispossession, but rather endeavour to confront them. As Pascoe himself went to the places in his book and met the people he talks about, his work is further authenticated and readers are able to gain a greater perspective through his real-life interactions. From ‘Lake Corangamite’, it can be concluded that it is only through thorough acknowledgement of Australia’s past and the way the subsequent actions that follow, will enable the nation to move forward. It is through this that the country will be able change, from the practice of shrouded ignorance and self-deception to one of full acknowledgment and respect for the traditional owners of the

The fact that Australia was considered as a global nation, which was ‘open to multiple international cultural, political and economic influences (pp.222), was very contentious. Sheridan makes it clear that Asia involvement has shaped Australia, acknowledging the positive and necessary changes in areas including culture, economy, education, defence and more. Knight indicates that Australia was encouraged to begin the desire for economic gain and civilisation. He states ‘Australia thus inherited from Britain a European country, its sense of cultural identity and its feeling of superiority towards Asia and Asians’(pp.223). This demonstrates that Australia views towards Asia were constantly changing leading to an increase in problems examples including smuggling and entering legally from other states.
The Lost Colony of Roanoke Island: Gone Without a Trace Have you ever heard of the mystery of the Roanoke Colony? This strange historical event began in 1584, during one of the first English expeditions to the New World to establish settlements. The settlers landed on Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina. After only one year, the colony was abandoned due to harsh weather, lack of supplies, and conflicts with the indigenous people in the area.
The 1788 colonisation at Sydney cove, disrupted trade and access to natural resources and impacted the Gameraigal way of life. Between 1790 and 1820 the colony expanded into the Gameraigal lands. Diseases such as small pox and gonorrhoea decimated the aboriginal population and a lack of common cultural understanding fuelled heavy conflict in the area. Many who survived became displaced from their traditional homes or integrated into European society. Alcohol and tobacco compounded problems further, and by the 1860’s aboriginal people were only occasional visitors to North Sydney.
Robert Drewe’s 1996 novel The Drowner is, among other things, a representation of Western Australian lifestyle, culture and identity in the late 19th century. At the time, Australia was still a young nation; an “underdog” among Western countries. However, numerous gold rushes brought wealth and prosperity to the nation, attracting millions of immigrants from mainly European countries. Australia’s national identity developed into one centred around the values of hard work, perseverance and mateship—values which are still central to our identity today.
In the years 1606 and 1770 over 50 European ships landed in Australia, which at the time was inhabited by the aborigines. Currently, the British are given the credit for this exploration, however this essay will argue that the British and the Dutch deserve equal credit. Although the Dutch exploration discovered the north, west and south parts of Australia (more than the British, whom only discovered the north side), Captain Cook claimed Australia and conducted extensive exploration of the east coast. The main Dutchman who deserves the credit is Willem Janszoon, but that doesn’t mean that no other Dutch explored Australia, Janszoon prompted further exploration from the Dutch. Some credit can be given to Captain James Cook for exploring the east side.

In 1788, life would begin to change dramatically as the First Fleet arrived and the Frontier Period began in Australia. This was a period of first contact between European and Aboriginal people and while a time of dispossession, disease and direct conflict; it is important to recognise that Indigenous people continually resisted the violation of their right to land, and its impact on Indigenous cultures and communities. The primary reason of British occupation of Australia was to establish a penal colony. After landing, the British simply ‘took’ the land with no consideration of the Aboriginal people; not believing they had any stake in the land at all. To justify this ‘taking’ of the land with no treaty nor agreement made about land occupation
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have the oldest surviving cultural history in the world, going back 50,000 – 65,000 years. The aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were hunter – gatherers who were well adapted to the land and the environment. Within these indigenous cultures there were hundreds of different languages spoken, therefore each indigenous culture had their own significant cultural and spiritual identity. The British first arrived in Australia in 1770, and labelled the land as ‘Terra Nullius’ (no man’s land). Between 1788 – 1900, it is estimated that the indigenous population of Australia was reduced by 90% due to the introduction of new disease, settler acquisition of indigenous lands, direct and violent conflict with the colonisers (Australians Together, 2016).
