Northwood Restaurant Observation

There are several different places you can observe whether they are new to you in the Muncie area or if they are familiar to you from your hometown. I choose to observe servers at the Northwood Cinema Grill in Fort Wayne, Indiana because it is a place in my hometown that I love to visit. The Northwood Cinema Grill is a restaurant and a movie theater in one. When observing the Northwood Cinema Grill, I decided to observe two servers on Friday and one server on Saturday. I decided to go this route, so I could see if any of their patterns overlapped and to watch their interactions with the customers. Going into this observation I was interested in what qualities make an effective server and how the customers responded to these qualities. I observed the Northwood Cinema Grill from noon to 12:30 on Friday. The weather Friday was very cold and windy. I reached the front of the building and went inside the huge glass doors. I walked into the theater that was playing Jumanji and instantly smelled popcorn which made my mouth water. The theater was a decent size holding a little over a hundred people and consisted of six sections with tables, chairs, and a bar counter in each. Traci's response to what qualities make an effective server was, "I feel like I'm an outgoing and friendly person, which helps me interact with the customers, make them feel comfortable, and make sure they are taken care of." When it came to the question about conversations with couples or families, her response was, "I probably talk to families more. Couples usually come to spend time together as a date, so they may not like to be bothered, but families with kids usually like to have a little more attention.
