The video, “Let’s Start a Conversation About Health . . . and Not Talk About Health Care at All” presents the importance of health and how it is more than just receiving health care. (“Health equity resources”, 2016) It focuses on how individuals are impacted by their economic and social conditions leading to dissimilar opportunities for health. This video presents a broad perspective of health and emphasizes everyone, which includes, students, nurses, parents, teachers, politicians and more to take action by focusing on health instead of health care. Both sources depicted the importance of an individual’s health rather then the medical treatments and health care services that are provided. All health professionals understand health problems such as cancer, injuries, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and moreover how most of these illnesses occur because of smoking, stress, unhealthy diets, and inactivity. (Raphael, 2009) The video and textbook both express the concern of poverty ultimately resulting in poor health conditions furthermore how health improves depending on one’s income and social level. People’s health is impacted in many ways, such as individual lifestyle factors being age, culture, religion, and gender. Race is an important topic as many immigrants move to Canada and are drastically impacted by the labor market segregation, poverty, joblessness, salary inequality, and poor community selection. (Raphael, 2009) Aboriginal status was something that was also a topic that was not mentioned however in Canada it is so important that the First Peoples of Canada are treated right and with respect and they are able to have secure living conditions which encourage health and wellbeing. Lastly, disability was not mentioned in the video however it is a very important matter as it is not just about intervening medically but about addressing social, civic, economic, cultural, and physical rights and violations of people with disabilities. (Raphael, 2009) In order to make people more aware and promote change there needs to be investments in the social determinants of health within the complex federal system, which could only happen if public awareness is created as well as political will and not only just community engagement.
