Something is only miserable if you think it so. I often find myself in miserable conditions. Such as a hard run. I think to myself, “This is miserable, I feel terrible, when will this end?” But reflecting on such times, I realize that having this mindset can make the run feel even harder and seem to take longer. I also find myself in this mindset during a boring class, “I’m so bored, I’d rather be anywhere else, I just want to go home and sleep.” Again, this mindset upon reflection makes the class even more miserable and causes more frustration while in the class. Christianity calls us to give people the benefit of the doubt. But in our society, it is hard to give people the benefit of the doubt because we are rightly afraid that they will take advantage of us and we will be left off worse for it. But if Christians would buy into the idea that God fights on behalf of those who put themselves in a position where they can easily be taken advantage of, it would be much easier to fulfill this call. First Corinthians 13:7 says, “Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” The love that is described in this verse, the love that is always hopeful, is what we are called to show to our enemies and friends alike. This is the love that Christ has for us. I always find it difficult to give the benefit of doubt. If I have the slightest notion that someone is doing something wrong, I go ahead and assume that they are. This is not “hopeful love”. This is not the love that we are called to have. But if I truly believe that God will fight on behalf of the weak, I need not fear that my decision to show hopeful love to a peer will come back to stab me in the back. Having faith that God will fight on your behalf is a hard thing to do, but it allows us to more effectively show Christ-like love to both our peers and our enemies. True happiness is having peace of mind. True happiness is having a peace of mind that can be attained by caring about the things of God and being a virtuous person. A lot of people, myself included, sometimes think that having possessions can bring happiness, and that these possessions are the greatest good. However, I forget that in heaven, all possessions are completely worthless. We cannot bring things of this world to paradise. So, in our time on earth, instead of investing in earthly possessions and pleasures, we should practice virtue and build up our treasure in heaven. This treasure store is what will last. Not our phones or our money. While these things can bring you a temporary feeling of pleasure, taking time to peruse God and the things of God brings a long-lasting peace and happiness that cannot be attained any other way. But taking time to peruse God and the things of God of the pleasing, earthly, tangible things is very difficult. Wanting the things of God requires you to have
