Brandon Smith Mr.Dittmar 12/14/2014 American History Book Report #2 “Killing Lincoln” Killing Lincoln is a very good easy to read historical book. I already knew some about when Lincoln was shot and how he died but this book put in so much more little details that any other thing I have gotten information from. I feel like Bill O'Rreilly did a very good job writing this book. I really like the way that it was wrote using the time and different days for the chapters. That helped give the book some detail and helped me understand what was going on in the book and when important scenes were easier to understand.
In the realistic short story “ Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, the main character named Victor, is desperate. Because he tries very hard to get a girlfriend, he finds many ways to be with his crush Teresa, and because he does embarrassing things to try and impress girls. The first reason Victor is desperate is because he tries hard to get a girlfriend. For instance, he promised himself “Teresa is going to be my girl this year”. In addition, Victor took Michael’s advice and used his (ridiculous) “strategy” on how to “get girls” by scowling at them.
Lucas Hahn Mr. Rodriguez Academic Lit. 15 June, 2023 The Cellar Analysis Throughout Lucas Hahn's short story The Cellar, the author explores the limits of human endurance both mentally and physically. The author portrays the mental limits of humans when we look at the character Ryan. Ryan at the beginning of the story was just a normal teenager, but at the end of the book he turned into a murderer.
In both Complete Maus and Night, there is a clear depiction that times of war unleash chaos on those involved, however, they are able to bring family members closer to one another in search of hope and safety. Throughout both novels, Vladek and Elie show clear acts of perseverance to help their family members in just Auschwitz alone. The acts that took place in Auschwitz are the worst possible things Humans can do to each other; mass-murder. However, during this time Vladek attempts to aid the love of his life, Anja, while Elie makes caring for his father his number 1 priority. It is evident that their actions determine the outcomes of the lives of their family members as well.

MAUS written by Art Spiegelman and Night written by Elie Wiesel have different approaches and use of storytelling have led to the same outcome, telling one’s story as a memoir as it shall not be forgotten. Spiegelman approaches his book as a graphic memoir, telling the story using visual and metaphors.

Not ever negative situation leads to an unwelcome outcome. Flannery O’Connor introduces how conflict changes a character for the better in her short story “Revelation”. The main character, Mrs. Turpin, likes to categorize the people she meets base on their looks and possessions. She is suddenly attacked by a patient named Mary-Grace, who is then quickly sedated. However, before the medication takes effect Mary-Grace leaves Mrs. Turpin with an insult that leaves a lasting impression that causes the protagonist to think deeply about herself as a person.
Arthur Dimmesdale was the town minister in The Scarlet Letter, a story of a young woman who committed adultery and faced the consequences, such as wearing a scarlet “A” on her chest. Dimmesdale was a very interesting character because he was very religious but also committed a sin that haunted him everyday. He also happened to be the man who was involved in the young woman’s adultery. He was never convicted, however he still faced the consequences everyday. Dimmesdale was a man of God.
Since 1989, over 1500 people have been exonerated for crimes they served time for but did not commit.(NRA) These are only the cases we know about. In our country’s justice system, many wrongfully convicted people are never given a chance to be exonerated and remain in prison for their entire sentencing. Errol Morris, an American film director attempted to shine a light on the dark side of the criminal justice system. In his 1988 documentary, “A Thin Blue Line,” Morris conveys the need for our justice system to be reformed as he trails the court case of Ranadall Adams, a man wrongfully convicted of a murder; following the case through the prosecution painting an unfair view of Adams, flimsy witness testimonys, and prosecutors who’s motives are
Literary Analysis: Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler Throughout the Parable of the Sower, we follow Lauren Olamina; a young, strong-willed, black women living amongst others within her gated community, Robledo. The story begins in post-apocalyptic year 2024, hearing firsthand experiences of the times, on account of Lauren’s journal entries. These entries allow us to further analyze how these experiences shaped both Lauren; before and after the raid, and the community she builds moving North. In this analysis, I will be looking at key events within the story that provide detail on the theme of inclusion and exclusion and how this inevitably coincides with the theme community and the importance of it throughout the story.
Stephanie Herrick Ordinary Men Analysis HST 369 February 22, 2017 Many men avoided WWII by joining the Order Police. These ‘policemen’ were sent to Poland, or the Soviet side of Poland to maintain order. There were thousands of men who were not wanting to enlist into the military to be on the front lines, thus deciding to join the police. The policemen had two ‘decrees’ to keep up with, it was described in the book Ordinary Men written by Christopher Browning, the commissar order; which involved for on-the-spot execution of any communist suspect of being an anti-German.

Many authors have written science-fiction stories to warn people about future, including Kurt Vonnegut and Stephen King. Vonnegut has written several science fiction stories using dark humor and irony, for example, the short story, 2BR02B. In this short story, Vonnegut describes a society where there is no death and the population of the United States is stabilized at forty million souls by killing someone for each person born. Mr. Wehling, a soon to be a father of three, discovers the flaws in society as a result of the birth of his children, Mr. Wehling has to find volunteers that will sacrifice themselves for his children. In I am the Doorway, Stephen King uses his style of suspense and horror to warn the audience.
The Personification of September Neil Gaiman effectively personifies September in his short story “October in the Chair” through his physical description, personality, and the story that they tell the others. Firstly, September is effectively personified in the method in which his appearance is described. Since school normally begins in September, September is notoriously associated with learning and education. September is depicted as a wise old man embodying stereotypical physical attributes often seen in older teachers and professors. September is described as “ He had a pencil-thin mustache and was balding in the front, which made his forehead seem high and wise” (Gaiman).
Death is an unknown, no one has ever died and come back to tell the tale, instead people have to imagine and come up with what they think it will be like. The poets, Emily Dickinson and William Cullen Bryant, both had very different perspectives when it came to writing about death. In Bryant’s “Thanatopsis”, the speaker emphasizes that one joins nature and should not be afraid because they will be with everyone else as equals when they die. This is different from Dickinson’s poem, “Because I could not stop for Death”, where the speaker takes a ride in a carriage with death for eternity.
