In the realistic short story “ Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, the main character named Victor, is desperate. Because he tries very hard to get a girlfriend, he finds many ways to be with his crush Teresa, and because he does embarrassing things to try and impress girls. The first reason Victor is desperate is because he tries hard to get a girlfriend. For instance, he promised himself “Teresa is going to be my girl this year”. In addition, Victor took Michael’s advice and used his (ridiculous) “strategy” on how to “get girls” by scowling at them. In an attempt to acquire girls' attention. Since Teresa has been his crush for years, this means he’s been trying to get her to be his girl for a long time and now he is even using Michael's (doubtfully effective) methods to get girls proving he is extremely desperate. …show more content…

To begin with, he took French to be in the same class as Teresa. Plus, Victor timed the exact moment Teresa would walk by just so he could “bump into her and say something clever”. This makes Victor seem desperate because he puts so much effort into being around Teresa more and even let her influence the class he picked. Not only that but the text shows Victor is always looking for Teresa. For instance the author says “He stretched out lazily in an attempt to disguise his snooping. Then he saw her. Victor moved to a table near her and daydreamed about taking her to a movie”.
