Third Ad: What the ads are saying In the third advertisement it shows social class through by displaying Chinese opera boots. This ad is interesting because you are shown boots but meanwhile there are five commands dispersed over the page and there is a phone in the bottom right hand corner. The first command says, “Ok Google, what does Harajuku style look like? Ok Google define glam. Ok Google, what’s cyberpunk? Ok Google, what do Chinese opera boots look like? Ok Google, show me photos of Nicholas Kirkwood for Meadham Kirchhoff” (People, 2014, p. 31). It directly correlated to a person’s socioeconomic status and a person’s class and how much money they earn. It relates to a person’s social standing and one’s income and what kind of job he/she has. This advertisement is targeting people of a high socio-economic status and it does not care for people in a low SES status. This relates to limitations of low socioeconomic status, since not being able to afford an iPhone or the Google app could cause problems to people of a low SES status. The first limitations includes limited alternatives which states that “youths with low-SES are not exposed to a variety of social and cultural settings” (Dolgin, 2011, p. 55). Poverty limits a persons educational and career advancements, meaning that if a person cannot afford a phone or Internet how can they properly complete the homework assignment if the Internet is involved? In addition to this, a person without a phone, education, or knowledge is helpless. Another limitation that is covered in not being able to have the socioeconomic status to afford an iPhone relates to deprivation and hardships. This advertisement has a lot going on it addresses many different items that a consumer may want. For instance, it address Chinese opera boots, Nicholas Kirkwood for Meadham Kirchhoff, the Google app, and a cell phone. Having all of these different items relates to a person’s social class and what a person can afford. How the messages can be experienced by adolescents: Adolescents could experience the messages in this ad because it does not have an adult model on the advertisement, it has Chinese opera boots. An adolescent could look at this ad and wonder what those boots are. An adolescent can experience this message if the adolescent who is viewing it has a cell phone and the Google app then they can look up what the different messages were on the advertisement.
