Nurses confirm their skills, knowledge, and abilities through certification and meeting ongoing learning and practice requirements through their certification. The advantages of being certificated are that patient, families, employers, and nurse’s benefit all from the certification. In the health care field nurses need to have knowledge and awareness of taking care of patients and taking care of someone else’s loved one. Registered nursing licensure measures a potential nurses competence in the ability to be proficient in the health care field. The rules and regulations viewed on the Maryland Board of Nursing website are strict and very well organized (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, n.d., para 1). It seems that now-a-days patients are sicker and need more critical care than ever better. Hospitals are just like any other business it has competitors and needs validation to open the doors. Certification is a vehicle for hospitals to say “Hey look at me!” It demonstrates to the public that we have skills and experienced professionals.
