Week five; the heart takes its first beat. Week sixteen; the lungs take their first breath. Week twenty-three; the first movement is felt. To have the privilege to be part of this life-changing journey and a woman’s story is what inspires me to become a midwife. Pregnancy and birth are natural processes in which I believe all women are designed for and therefore capable of.
Not all heroes wear capes, they wear scrubs too. The career I plan to pursue is a nurse practitioner. A nurse practitioner diagnoses and treats illnesses, independently or as part of a healthcare team, such as hospital. Their focus is disease prevention towards their patients and everyone. Nurse practitioners may order, perform, or interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and X-rays, they may also prescribe medication.
First, it is important to define what it means to be an “Advanced Practice Nurse” in the state of Indiana before we can look at the stipulations set. It is defined as a registered nurse who is currently holding: knowledge acquired from a formal, and organized institution of learning, and additionally, clinical experience, or a stated board approved equivalent.
The Indiana State Board of Nursing (2011) defines advanced practice nursing as a registered nurse who has attained advanced knowledge and skills through an organized program of study. The three categories of study include nurse practitioner, certified nurse mid-wife, or clinical nurse specialist. National certification is not required for nurse practitioners completing an accredited graduate program. However, if the continuing education is part of a certificate program then a national certification is required. Although certification is not required in Indiana, Riley Hospital for Children nurse practitioners are required to certify within one year of employment.

Never did I know there was such thing as a school nurse and never did I think would have the opportunity to follow around a school nurse. In my school district, the school nurse was the office staff, which those right had to be delegated to them through a nurse. My clinical rotation this week was in the Fort Morgan School District. I had the opportunity to work many different age groups such as elementary, middle school, and high school. Most people don’t understand all the school nurse duties they have to accomplish by themselves.
There are several issues in professional nursing today. This research paper will outline three issues that nurses and healthcare professionals are faced with within the profession. Reflection has been strongly advocated by the English National Board for Nursing & Midwifery (1994), and a wealth of nursing literature over the past decade had been published to improve nursing practice. Reflection is an in-depth consideration of events or situations outside of one-self, solitary, or with critical support. Burnard (1995) argues that, reflection has its roots in experiential learning, as it forms the second stage of the experiential learning cycle. Active reflection gives nurses the confidence in terms of clinical decision making. It can also be a meaning of identifying strengths and weaknesses in practice and enabling nurses to learn from their mistakes.

During these past weeks at the Archbold ER, I had the opportunity to put into practice many of the content learned in class. This included but was not limited to the proper placement of a Foley catheter using sterile techniques, insertion of an NG tube, and assessment of patients. Even though I attempted to complete some of my initial goals for this internship, I noticed that I couldn’t complete a few of them due to lack of time and lack of experience in the field. Therefore, some of my goals that I’ll need to address during the following three weeks include improve my assessment skills, have better communication with my patients, and improve my questioning to get a better understanding of the cause that brought them in.
