Never did I know there was such thing as a school nurse and never did I think would have the opportunity to follow around a school nurse. In my school district, the school nurse was the office staff, which those right had to be delegated to them through a nurse. My clinical rotation this week was in the Fort Morgan School District. I had the opportunity to work many different age groups such as elementary, middle school, and high school. Most people don’t understand all the school nurse duties they have to accomplish by themselves. As a school nurse, there are multiple roles that are to be accomplished throughout the day. Some of the most important roles that a school nurse accomplishes is providing the district with health and safety objectives, maintaining appropriate health care records such as immunizations, provide care plans for students with a significant health problem, follow the roles of delegating task to the health aid, and provide a detail assessment on the children. Each nurse has such a role, in every department they are in. For school nurse, they have a position description which helps them, and the staff understand the roles of the school nurse. An important example of a role in the school nurse that I was able to observer was the strict rules on the immunization. This district, along with many other school districts, is able to pull up the immunization record. If the children is missing a vaccination, it’s the school nurse responsible to call and sent a information letter remining the family that certain immunization need to be done before the child can come back to school. The school nurse uses guidelines and protocols from the Colorado Department of Education, and the Colorado Act of Nursing. These websites are able to give examples of situations that might appear in a school nurses job and ways to handle them in an emergent situation. In addition to the CDE, and Colorado Act of Nursing, the school nurse also has guidelines and protocols to follow in the school district. While I was at this clinical rotation, I was able to sit in a meeting with the staff about guidelines and protocols in an emergent situation, such as a tornado. The main focus for this topic, was to get the children to safety and for the nurse to be able to distinguish between the student with high medical attention, vs low medical attention. As a nurse, this is an extremely important aspect in out career field. It was interesting to see how the student nurse was able to distinguish which children need help first and which were stable enough to wait until help has arrived.
