Nurture 's Influence Throughout Childhood and Adolescence The nature versus nurture debate has puzzled many researchers, scientists, and philosophers alike for some time. Nature refers to hereditary influences that have been programmed into our DNA by genes, whereas nurture refers to environmental influences that we are exposed to, such as parents, peers, and social or economic class to name a few. Attempting to disentangle the influence of our genetic makeup from our environment and correlate those influences with how a person develops to be who they are can be difficult. Many researchers have conducted studies that continue to clarify the role that both influences play in development, with the consensus that nature and nurture each have an important and interrelated role in the overall process of development from childhood to adulthood. Though this may be the case, nurture has a significant influence on how genes manifest behavior throughout childhood and adolescence. A child 's ability to interact effectively with their peers is impacted by their environment. The nature versus nurture debate will likely continue due to the complex interaction of each with the other. However, in order to understand the development of certain behaviors throughout childhood and adolescence, examining environmental influences is imperative. While genes are similar to a code that can help predict development, they are not definitive answers, and environmental factors such as peers, parents, and society are important and influential variables. When examining the debate between nature and nurture, it is easy to say that our nature is what makes us who we are; Although if that were the case, twins who share 100 percent of their genetic makeup would be exactly the same.
