Khullar says,”Even for the most knowledgeable and resourceful among us, consistently eating well is a challenge. ”(Khullar) which is true because although someone can be well informed it is much easier to acquire unhealthy food than it is to acquire healthy food. Being able to look at all the ingredients written on a label and analyze the food a person buys can be time consuming. Most people would rather just ignore doing this and go about their life. Khullar looks deeper into the problem of obesity that people would not consider are reasons behind it.
In recent decade, the United States has seen supermarkets continuously get filled with packages labeled with things like “Low sodium” or “No Trans Fats.” Companies stick these labels on their food to match the current fads of what is good for you and what is not. In his essay Unhappy Meals, Michael Pollan advocates a return to natural and basic foods, and deplores nutritionism. Pollan argues that nutritionism does not actually tell people what is healthy or not, and that the only way to be sure you are eating healthy is to eat natural, fresh food.
Even those who did not solely eat processed and high calorie foods still were not educated on how nutritious foods were for their bodies. It was commonly thought that nutrition was only something that impoverished and starving communities had to focus on, yet the obesity epidemic was formed partially because so many people did not know what affects the food they consumed had on their bodies. Since there was no previous nutritional education that the people of Guatemala received, groups such as INCAP worked to educate and provide for such communities. Schools had nutrition education courses, obesity clinics provided information on nutrients and minerals necessary to keep the body working. Within the movie In Defense of Food, Michael Pollan attempts to tackle the question of what we “should” eat. As simple as he can, Pollan examines that question in depth, trying to push through the supermarket, good industry, diet industry, and another place people go to find and choose the food they eat. I wouldn't say its a guide on specific foods that will increase your health but more towards the line of philosophic view on what “food” has become in the united states and also comparing it to other countries around the world. Pollan feels that us complicating the food around us is not benefiting us, but hurting us. When I say complicated food I'm referring to the center of grocery stores with the all processed food or diet “healthy” food.
Obesity is a prevalent issue within the United States. “According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) (2009-2010), approximately 69% of adults are overweight or obese, with more than 78 million adult Americans considered obese”. Today’s society is inundated with a firestorm of information regarding the types of foods that are healthy and will decrease obesity. The most prominent voices in today’s food culture, primarily the wholesome-food movement, believe eating unprocessed food is the only way to live long, healthy lives free of obesity. However, journalist David H. Freedman argues that individuals should not fall prey to these false misconceptions.
Today’s society is surfaced with various problems, one of them being our diet along with obesity. The health of our country’s people has become a national problem. One’s diet is based upon their choices, but even then there are many controversial views upon what is healthy and what is not. Two essays that I read uniquely present their views on this topic. First, there is “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating” by Mary Maxfield and then there is “Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko.
Eating Healthy Michael Pollan, a health food spokesperson, made some interesting critiques on how he believes that there is an American paradox such as, “a notably unhealthy population preoccupied with… the idea of eating healthy” (Maxfield, 442). The idea taken from Michael Pollan’s quote is that he believes the definition of healthy eating has more to do with how it is “driven by a well-funded corporate machine” (Maxfield, 442). He is also claiming that the food industry is benefiting on our lack of knowledge on how to eat properly when it comes to being healthy. How the Healthy-Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 Changed American Views of Nutrition In 1991, the USDA announced the Eating Right Pyramid. It was made to be a visual representation of what a person’s diet should consist of as recommended by the federal government. This so-called food pyramid received criticism before it was ever revealed and long after. Despite this, it would serve as the model for the United States for 20 years until the advent of MyPlate in 2011.
The Allied and Axis Powers were the two groups of countries that fought against each other in World War II. Each group had three main countries. The United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union were the leaders of the Allied Powers, while Germany, Italy, and Japan were the elite of the Axis Powers. France was also an important country for the Allied Powers, but it was conquered quickly at the beginning of the war. The leader of the United States during World War II was Franklin D. Roosevelt and later on Harry S. Truman, and Winston Churchill was the prime minister of Great Britain at the time.
This source has helped my research a lot because the survey they put on this source states how many people want to live a healthier lifestyle but cannot because they have trouble understanding what foods are healthy and what aren 't because they don 't understand what is being said on the nutrition labels. This source also states that these confusing nutrition labels don 't just make it hard for people who are dieting but it also hard for people who have allergies or sensitivity to some types of foods. The nutrition labels don 't state clear enough of what is actually being processed into the food. I also chose this source because it says that ingredients are a major part in how consumers pick their foods. On most food labels the ingredients are so small that most people cannot see what it says.

A majority of people eat harmful foods and do not receive the nutrition they need to stay healthy. There are a number of reasons why nutrition is lacking. A lot of teens and college students eat snacks that are not healthy such as chips, pop, candy, etc.

Based on my data for my daily intake of foods, I would say that I live a pretty healthy life. I went over the food groups and calories, nutrients, food details and meal summary of my food diary and I thought it was interesting to look at all the little details of the different foods I ate throughout the day for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. If I had to set 5 goals to improve my nutrition in what I eat and how I keep myself healthy I would have to say for the first one, exercise more, the second one choose healthier meal options, third one eat more throughout the day, fourth one choose healthier snacks, and for the last one do not eat when bored. I try to exercise as much as I can when I have free time, but it is sometimes hard to find some free time.
In general, a healthy diet can help to maintain a healthy body weight or improve overall health and decrease the risk of many diet-related chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers. There is a good evidence proved that eating a healthy diet can reduce the risk of obesity and illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and some types of cancer. The foods that people consume contains several different types of nutrients, which are all required for the vital processes of human body. Impact and contribution of a healthy diet to a positive lifestyle are according to people’s lifestyle, behavioral and habits. Examples, eating habits, health awareness, physical activity, lifestyle practices, and others that will influence people’s lifespan and lifestyle.
One of the most important ways to stay healthy is to have healthy food and eat them in an appropriate time. Healthy eating is the cornerstone in preventing the health from many conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and blood pressure. Junk foods should be avoided as they do not have any nutrients, so no point in eating them. Instead of having these fast and unhealthy foods, the diet should contain leafy vegetables, fresh vegetables, fruits, milk, and fish as these are plenty in nutrients.
