Equality for Women Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions” set a strong foundation that began the movement towards equality for women. Since her declaration was first presented at the Seneca Falls Convention, there has been considerable improvement in women’s rights. Although most issues she originally brought up have been resolved, there are a few that still need improvement, including the wage gap between men and women, representation in the workforce, and self-image of women. One big issue that remains prominent today in the United States is the gender wage gap, where men are making quite a bit more money that women.
Women should be able to get the same pay when working in the same field as men, there should be no difference in pay because that person is a female, women can do men work to, sometimes they can do it better than men can. This align with my values because
1) Intersectionality Intersectionality is how women’s experiences within a culture vary depending on race, class, ethnicity, nationality, disability, age, sexual orientation, region and religion (Burn 8). For example, in the film, “Listen Up! New Voices for Reproductive Justice,” the director emphasizes how current mainstream women’s issues are a reflection of the issues females in the white middle class sector face. Thus, since mainstream women’s issues are more common, the world has trouble understanding how mainstream problems are different for women of diverse backgrounds. Sexism runs rampant through the institutions of contemporary life. While politics, marriage, education, and athletics are a few of many institutions plagued by sexism, women’s healthcare is perhaps the most egregious of them all because it is a life or death proposition. Women’s healthcare is often put second to men’s healthcare, as physicians neglect to recognize the biological differences between the sexes. This results in women receiving improper treatment for their symptoms or having their needs entirely neglected. I have had a negative experience in the healthcare system because of my gender, it is a personal story but based on the subject I feel like I can share, I received my first routine pap smear when I was 17, I had a lot of anxiety about it and I was very tense and nervous as most women are for their first pap smear. My OBGYN at the time who was a middle aged man literally said in response to my nervousness “I hope you do not act like this during intercourse” I was so stunned and embarrassed I didn’t know what to say to his rude comment. Because of that experience I only go to female providers now especially for my feminine health, looking back as an adult I wish I would have told him off and reported him for his comment. Although women had attained a greater access of jobs and legal rights in the workplace, they still have a long way to go in terms of full equality. Women are still paid 80% of what men are paid, the gap even larger for women of color and elder women. In current times, women’s earning have stagnated, and pay equity isn’t expected until over 50 years from now. There needs to be further legislation to close the wage gap and give women the pay they deserve. The 2nd Wave of Feminism started by the women of the mid-twentieth century established new rights for working women, however, women are still struggling for equal pay and treatment in the workforce.

Many Americans are killed with illegal guns each year and the government should tough laws regulated gun control and as we are talking it we have to mention Federal Firearms Act that works today even it was established in 1938. “Anyone involved in the selling of firearms was required to obtain a Federal Firearms License from the Secretary of Commerce. They were also required to record the names and addresses of everyone they sold guns to and were prohibited from selling to those people who were convicted of certain crimes or lack of permit.” The government established this law to monitor illegal firearms. People who are selling guns should record the buyers names, so law enforcement have this information to track down suspects if someone caused harm with a firearm.
Women should request a twenty percent pay increase to even up the gender pay gap. In most jobs women earn eighty cents for every dollar a man earns for the exact same job. Employers should pay good, qualified women, who can competently perform their job duties, the same wages they pay men for the same work. Earning twenty percent less is a significant amount and it adds up over time. Throughout the years the pay gap has narrowed but it’s still not equal pay for equal work.
Determined, intelligent and creative. These words all have one thing in common, they described the women’s struggle in the medical field. Obstacle after obstacle has been thrown at women throughout history and yet females make up forty-six percent of all physicians in the world today. This means something to me and hopefully the young people in my community. One role model of mine once said: “I can be a leader and still need guidance, be direct and still be kind, be a listener and still have a voice.”
Women face getting treated differently, lower paying positions, the opinions of men, and the idea that because they are women they are not capable of the same kind of work men are capable of. The more people that support the different movements for women’s rights the better chance of this issue becoming more well known. Although some may know the struggle women go through to be compared as equally to men, there is still room for more to learn about this issue.
