Death is inevitable, but premature death can be prevented. Obesity is ranked second in preventable causes of death in America, just below smoking tobacco. An active lifestyle should be practiced by the general population because, anyone can participate, there are many health and mental benefits, and age does not affect the ability to stay fit. There are many misconceptions that revolve around exercise. For example, lifting weights do not make the body bulky unless taking the necessary supplements and practicing the proper diet to do so. Many health problems that happen with age can be prevented by physical exercise. Americans typically gain weight throughout their mid-age years. Since the muscle can deteriorate, the weight that is gained back is typically fat. Extra fat can cause health problems such as bad cholesterol, diabetes and, heart and joint problems (Publications). Although exercise is a great way to stay healthy, fitness also includes healthy habits. The effects of drugs and alcohol can cancel out the effects of exercise. Avoiding them should be considered. Eating healthy and drinking plenty of water should also be practiced with daily exercise by people of all ages. These methods have been proven to be the best “cure” for the side effects of aging (Publications). However, older people are more likely to break bones due to instability. To prevent falling, there are exercises that can be done. Keeping the human body in a physically fit state can help a person stay agile and flexible as they age.
