According to World Health Organization, a person is obese when he has a body mass index (Bmi) of 30. The best way to measure overweight and obesity is by using a (bmi) measuring system that is the combination of your body mass and height. A way that people can become obese or overweight is by emotional eating. This happens when people feel depressed, lonely, and stress. The problem of weight gain is something that has greatly impacted the United States. In 2003 a survey determined that 15 percent of all the U.S citizens are considered obese or overweight. Research then showed that in 2001-2004 17% or 12.5 million of the US ages 2-19 have become obese tripling since 1980. For example a young girl in Mexico named Alma suffers from being overweight. She is only 12 years old and weighs a total of 160 pounds. She once was thin like an average 12 year old that would be expected to weigh 100 pounds. She began to one day think that she was ugly and ate her feelings away. Then the boys started to notice the change in school and began to make fun of her and call her names. This made her feel depressed and caused her to eat excessively. She then stopped watching how much junk food she ate and her weight. Then one day her best friend asker Alma “can we talk after school?” Alma replied “yes.” Her best friend met up with her after school and told her is everything ok you are losing yourself in the diet you have and you should change that that’s the only way the boys in school will leave you alone. Alma went hope shocked and speechless because she never saw that coming. She then pondered about her weight and what she had done to herself over the time and what her best friend told her. She came to the conclusion that she will stop eating whenever she felt depressed and go run every time she did and work out every day for 30 minutes. She later said “everyone has their problems and there’s always a solution to them you just got to work hard enough for it.”
