The happiness of the American people is in jeopardy because of the increase in obesity related health problems and the lack of food education in the public education system. Many of the processed foods that are part of the Standard American Diet are full of sugar. Too much sugar is causing many of the health problems in America.
Many of the healthcare problems in America is somehow related to or caused by obesity. The top three leading causes of death – stroke, cancer, and heart disease – are all caused by obesity (Oliver 2010). Not only is obesity the cause of premature loss of life, but it also costs America over 150 billion dollars a year in healthcare costs. The public education system neglects to te4aech children about healthier food options like natural foods or vegetables (Oliver 2010). Children and adults do not know about healthier food options because of the public educations system’s lack of an exhaustive food education. As a result, many people do not eat healthier. Also, according to the USDA, variety of food in your diet leads to a healthier, happier life.
According to Robin Konie’s article, sugar is the body’s preferred and most easily accessible fuel source. Although sugar is one way to get the energy that our bodies need to function, there are other ways to get the energy we need. There are many people who experience “sensations of clarity, easy weight loss, when turning to a no-sugar or low-carb diet” (Konie). These people’s bodies using adrenaline and cortisol for energy.
Sugar in processed foods is, quite clearly, the leading cause of obesity in America. Obesity is one of the leading causes of health problems in America. So the next time you have the choice between processed foods full of unhealthy sugars and a healthy sugar-free option, you know which one to
