In introduction to sociology I’ve learned many things about what kind of society we live in. For our final paper, we had to visit three various locations. The first day I visited the college that I’m going to be transferring to, which is New York City College of Technology, known as City Tech. On the second day I was observing the bank tellers in Citibank in Brooklyn New York. On the last day I visited Queen Center Mall. For the three days that I was observing I noticed some judgements based on race, ethnicity, gender and stereotyping. Ethnicity is “ Refers to the cultural practices and outlooks of a given community that have emerged historically and that set people apart.” (Giddens,Duneier,Appelbaum,Carr, pg 245) Race is the “Differences …show more content…

Gender refers not to the physical attributes distinguishing men and women but to socially formed traits of masculinity and femininity.” (Giddens,Duneier,Appelbaum,Carr, pg 216) On the first day I had to observe a college of my choice. I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary in H&M, but then I decided to go into Armani exchange with my dad. When I entered the store, I did notice some judgements with the employees. First my dad who is two times lighter than me and is wearing some clothes from Armani exchange was greeted by two white females when he walked in. I noticed that when I walked in I wasn’t greeted at all. Was is it because I wasn’t white or a male? Or was it because I wasn’t wearing the right clothes? When I was browsing in the women section I got asked twice if I need help, which I said no to, but not once did they ask my dad if he needed help. When I continued to browse the store one of female employees was asking me if I needed help finding my size. I felt like I was being rushed to get out of the store. When I took a step back and I looked around the store there was only two people of color in the store including myself. The security and myself were the only people who you can tell were not white. When it was time to pay I was paying with my credit card and I was asked for ID. Which was normal, but the cashier
