The 1818 attack on Pensacola was the last military action in the First Seminole War. The U.S. had received information that the Spanish were supplying weapons, ammunition, and supplies in their fight with the United States. General Jackson and his men set off to Pensacola and upon arrival found the Spanish Troops had taken shelter in the newly built Fort Barrancas. After both sides exchanged artillery fire’ for a few days, the fort was rendered inhabitable from artillery shells which hit a magazine causing the wooden structures to burn. Three times Jackson demanded the surrender of the fort, and three times Masot refused it.
Meet my Jazz band. This is a picture of us in New Orleans my junior year during spring break to play Jazz. I decided upon this picture because this band has had such a profound impact on how I frame my future. My connection with music through the piano has been fostered ever since I could reach those shiny black and white collection of keys. Starting at the age of four, playing the classical music of Mozart and Bach was what my musical background was founded upon, with tangible medals and accomplishments as achievements.
On October 5th, in Founders hall of SFC, David Jolley and Martha Locker performed a concert using the French Horn and piano. David Jolley grew up in California and been “performing all over the world”. He has been working together with different groups and some of his work are meaningful. Jolley instrument, the French horn, he explained to the crowd that 100 of years ago the horn was once called the hand horn because people would use their hands to make different sounds. The French horn is a ‘brass instrument made of tubing wrapped into a coil with a flared bell”.
Music can bring the brightest of joys that keeps us moving through our dull and boring lives. An example of this joy is Ishmael Beah’s life as a boy soldier in his book A Long Way Gone. As he tells you his story, he tells of his dance group with his friends, the times he heard music in the middle of war, and how music saved him from the madness that brewed within him. Music has the unique ability to create peace in a person’s life despite the difficulties surrounding them, and to bring a constant reminder of who they are as a person.
The Monterey Pop Music festival was a concert that held for three day from June 16 to June 18. Thousands of people attend the concert to watch the musical performance by bands or singer that they love. Many popular bands involve in performing their own songs or covers such as The Who, Simon and Garfunkel, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. Simon and Garfunkel is my most favorite artist.
Hearing the breathtaking sound of a beautiful countermelody gliding just beneath and blending with a powerful melody can send shivers down the spines of many people. At a concert, instruments of all different shapes, sizes, and sounds come together to put on a performance for the community to hear, and if the chords balance just right, an incredible song can turn into a majestic story. Not to mention, most students who participate in these bands are extremely passionate about creating music. The memorization skills of these kids are generally much better than those of a person who does not participate in band. Additionally, the stress levels that they may develop in school are lower, and their grades could improve drastically.
The concert on May 5th turned out to be pretty good. The concert turned out to be enjoyable and was a fun time for people to listen to their children either play an instrument or sing. I heard multiple good things about our concert, things such as how cute the elementary kids were and how good the band played. I think we sounded better than other years. This is the best we will sound when compared to the years to come.
In his presentation, David Broza shared his experiences of music as a tool for social change. He writes his own lyrics and music to convey his ideas and hopes for peace, especially in Jerusalem. Broza explained that change is not measured by size, it is measured by endurance – “enduring the dream until it comes to life.” This reminded me of Paul Shane Spear ’s quote, “As one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person.”
Noting mentally that the French horns also had a solo accompanied by the clarinets I could see that much of this piece’s instruments gave an endearing performance that not only enticed me but most of the audience as well. As I looked around the room I noticed everyone’s heads moving back and forth swaying with the melody of the music. I could just imagine being in a Christmas movie, ice skating, and tasting the soft taste of snow while I skate around and feel the winter breeze against my cheeks. And although, this was the last piece of the night, I wanted that moment to last a little bit longer. Furthermore, I liked all of the pieces on the program, but the one that I liked secondly aside from the Waltz of the Flowers piece was the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy piece.
As I’m getting ready to perform on the field, the crowd is looking down at me. I forget everything as I get to my spot. I hear everyone around me counting 5..6..7..8.. and we are off. My heart pounds in my chest as my nerves speed up. I hear the Drumline playing off in the background, but I block everything out and focus on what comes next.
For example, the emotion in a singer’s voice can impact the way people feel about the topic compared to reading it themselves. Songs elicit a listener’s call to action through interaction with the beat, the singer, and the lyrics. Furthermore, a meaningful song can impact someone so deeply that they share it with significant
“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything” (Plato). If my childhood was filled with anything: it was imagination. From my earliest memories of my cousin, and I putting on a sold out concert on my papaw’s front porch; to putting my baby dolls to sleep with lullabies. Music has always been a big part of my life: it was the one thing I could always count on, no matter where I went; and that still stands true today.
Do people ever stop and think that a certain song has changed their mood completely? One minute they were mad and the next they are sad. Or that music can help people with illnesses and disabilities. How music can affect the brain, emotions, memory and so much more. Music plays a key part in today’s society.
Music has always been a part of my life. In definition, it is “vocal or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.” Ever since I was a young child, I have loved music. The strong, steady beats, the entrancing melodies, and the lyrics that vary between heartwarming and heart-wrenching have always had an unexplainable effect on my life. Music seems to have the ability to change certain aspects of my world.
