Is Odysseus a good leader?
George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr, these are just some examples of great leaders. People look up to them, believe in them, and even trust them with their lives. They are great leaders for many things like personal traits and characteristics. They also are trusted because they are good at what they do, they have high success rates. Now the great Greek hero Odysseus does not fit this outline of a good leader. He is not very trustworthy, he puts his men at risk and the most obvious fact is all his men die. The journey of Odysseus and his men is a treacherous and ruthless one. However, many times throughout the trip Odysseus seems to have a distorted vision and becomes worried about his own survival rather than his men. He is arrogant in his ways, this puts his men in danger. Today, if a boat crashed it is said for the captain to be the last to flee, in wars and battle the leader is also in front. Now Odysseus hides behind his man, metaphorically and literally. He is not doing this every time. He puts his men in danger one by just going into the cave. He clearly had suspicious that a monster was in there, but he went anyways to satisfy his curiosity. But him giving his name out of pride put him and his men in great danger. “For it is better far to mourn six comrades in thy ship than all together” This implies that men should be sacrificed.
