Odysseus Hero Characteristics

What really is a hero? A hero is described as someone who represents its cultures beliefs and their hopes, in which this case is the ancient Greeks. In Book Nine of The Odyssey, “The One-Eyed Giant’s Cave,” written by Homer, begins the book by stating heroic characteristics of Odysseus. Homer describes Odysseus as god-like, intelligent when faced with many difficult challenges, as well as a committed warrior to his homeland. Odysseus is considered a hero by everyone because he symbolizes the ancient Greeks cultures and values. One of the most valued Greek characteristics was the mentality of being cleverness and wittiness. Another valued characteristic of the Greeks was loyalty and faithfulness. To the Greeks also valued the gods because they were very important to them and was part of their culture. …show more content…

For example, in the book it states, “My wits kept weaving, weaving dunning schemes like at stake, monstrous death staring us in the face till this plan struck my mind as best. That flock, those well-fed rams with their splendid thick fleece, sturdy, handsome beasts sporting their dark weight of wool: I ashed them abreast, quietly, twisting the willow-twigs the Cyclops slept on - giant, lawless brute - I took them three by three; each ram in the middle bore a man while the two rams either side would shield him well.” This example explains how Odysseus used his cleverness and wittiness to escape from the Cyclone’s cave. This shows that even when faced with difficult challenges Odysseus is very intelligent
