Within the closed doors of your apartment in New York City you will find a barrier from you and the outside world. A time to get away from all of the girls waiting in the Lavender room to see someone famous, all of the curse words written in elementary schools, and all of the Stradlatters who think they are the best. Although there is no escaping the realities of the world completely, getting to go home is a necessity because it is a place where you feel protected. Home is not always a physical, standing structure, but rather a place in your heart where you know you will always be protected, stable, and happy. Odysseus’s journey may seem like it has nothing in common with yours; however, you both have faced many obstacles on your journeys home. Odysseus pines to go home to reunite with his family. This is Odysseus’s one goal, and because he never looses site of his goal, he eventually returns back to his home, Ithaca. I feel like once we find your main goal, you will be on the track to getting back home. Odysseus was not afraid to ask for help multiple times on his long journey home, and so I encourage you to do the same thing. One person who helped Odysseus was the king of Phaecia, Alcinous. Odysseus first had to describe his whole story to Alcinous, but Alcinous ended up supplying Odysseus with all that he needed and more to get back to Ithaca. Mr. Antolini may be your Alcinous, Holden. You had to share part of your journey with Mr. Antolini, and once he understood a little bit more of your background, he was able to help you. Mr. Antolini may not have gathered his whole town to bring you gifts and given you a ship to sail home, but he did help you by talking through the problem, giving you a place to sleep, and giving you a note with a quote on it. Both you and Odysseus faced challenges that may not have been able to been overcame without the help of Alcinous and Mr. Antolini.
Overall, I feel as if you and Odysseus have many things in common. You and Odysseus face obstacles, receive help, and continue looking for home. Odysseus has found his way home because he never let his goal get out of site. I know that I could help you find your goal and get you home.
