This paper will be about how Odysseus became a hero and the obstacles he faced during his journey home, and how my choice text “Long way down” compares with the Odyssey. This essay comes from the odyssey written in the 7th century BC by Homer. Before he was lost at sea and missing for 10 years he was a war hero, he is the one who won the trojan war for the greeks with his genius idea of the trojan horse where they made a hollow horse that they stuffed warriors into and they gave it to the trojans as peace gift but after they celebrated and got drunk and fell asleep the warriors came out and opened the gates to troy and they killed all of the trojans and won the war. Lots of his men will die and it's not just a physical journey it's an emotional one too because he wants to get home to his wife. For example, Polyphemus was one of Odysseus’s most significant challenges because they had to survive and move this massive stone blocking their way out and on Pg. 663 line 277 Odysseus says “neither reply nor pity came from him, but in one stride he clutched at my companions and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out, spattering the floor.”This shows that the cyclopes have been killing some of his men, making it difficult for him to escape. Also through Long way down, Will has to face many obstacles as well like all of the people he meets and sees in the elevator to his killer and also if he has the guts to kill his brother's killer because he is scared and nervous. When Odysseus was still fighting in the trojan war, Athena gave Odysseus the idea of the trojan horse and that is how they won the war. And if Athena didn’t give him the idea then they may not have won the war. Also, Buck is one of the people Will meets in the elevator and he was one of Will’s brother's friends. We learn that he got shot and died so he is a spirit. Buck helps Will when he is unsure of killing Riggs and when other people get into the elevator he helps guide Will when he needs it one of the people we meet is Buck's killer. And in the clip of the gun, there is one bullet missing and we learn that Will’s brother used that bullet to kill Buck’s killer.
