That next morning Odysseus went on a rock and screamed, “I Odysseus have defeated the Trojan War!” A second example of his pride being shown is when he comes home from his twenty year journey. The author, Homer, uses Odysseus’ arrogance to create a melancholic atmosphere to convey the idea that arrogance is a fatal flaw that will lead those around them to pain and suffering.

Many times throughout the book that we have been reading “The Odyssey” we see Odysseus showing great honor to many situations such as battles, fallen friends and even enemies and possibly the most relevant for what I have to say, higher powers and by this I mean kings, gods and even substantial enemies, this causes things to start going his way at least the best that those he shows honor to can apply. So the question is, how does this show up against today's world approximately 3000 years later and how important it is to have lots of honor then and now. Odysseus honors those who he respects and by this i mean that he will honor his crew, his family, the gods, kings and even enemies at times. When odysseus honors people they see that and respect him, putting him on a more level ground with people that he needs as allies, these allies become what i think is one of the most important aspects that he portrays.

The Odyssey portrays many themes including vengeance, hospitality, courage, bravery and more. Odysseus experiences some good and bad during his journey. He comes across people who help him, but also comes across creatures who hold him back. Odysseus is an Epic hero because of his quick thinking skills, bravery, and confidence for himself and his men.
When Telemachus encounters Menelaus, readers learn more about the heroic status of Odysseus through a set of epic conventions. Menelaus and Telemachus’ exchange in particular gives insight on the epic conventions that are used to praise Odysseus for his heroism. After listening to Telemachus troubles and pleas for help, Menelaus begins his speech with praise for Odysseus through an epithet, calling him a “great captain” (359). By saying this Menelaus shows respect for Odysseus’ leadership and skill. Menelaus continues with an epic simile, which doesn’t contribute much to the plot, but can reveals more about Odysseus’ heroic status.
A hero is someone who is revered for his or her exceptional achievements and bravery. Anyone who puts themselves before others not for recognition or an award, but because it is the right thing to do, is a true hero. In "The Odyssey," written by Homer is an epic poem about a man named Odysseus and his crewmates competing against the power of the gods to return to their homeland, Ithaca. Throughout his journey, he loses almost all of his men, but Odysseus finally arrives home, concluding his prolonged twenty-year voyage. Odysseus must battle the suitors that have taken his wife Penelope, and may soon kill his son Telemachus.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus repeatedly shows that he is polytropos, for as Zeus says “There is no mortal half so wise”(3). Using his wits, Odysseus gets him and his men out of several sticky situations in the Odyssey, proving his leadership through his actions that save the lives of his crew member. On the other hand Odysseus’ streak of constantly outsmarting challenges, goes to his head, and unfortunately causes Odysseus to develop a hubris. His pride at times makes him arrogant, believing that he always knows best, which leads to the untimely demise of his crew. While Odysseus proves to be good leader by saving his crew from trouble with his wits, he is ultimately a bad leader because he refuses to listen to advice.
In Greek mythology there are over a thousand stories about heroes and their adventures against nature and mystical and dangerous creatures. But there are always a few traits in the heroes that are repeated in all of these stories. And the Odyssey is not different. Through out the Odyssey the main character, Odysseus, shows a number of heroic qualities. Some of those qualities he shows is his kindness for his men, and bravery when facing all of the hardships in the Odyssey.
This pride of his is what got him and his men into their situation in the first place. It is obvious in the book and the movie that everything that happened could have been prevented if Odysseus would not have tried to take all the credit for the defeat of the Trojans. During the movie and the book Odysseus’s arrogance, ego, and pride get in the way of him and his men getting home. If it weren't for him they could have all made it home to Ithaca instead of just Odysseus by himself twenty years after he first left

The customs of ancient greek influenced people to uphold their honor and be prideful which leads to stubbornness and conflict. Great stories of epic adventures were told best, representing the effect of pride in Homer's “The Odyssey” showing Odysseus journey home facing many obstacles that resulted because of his honorable personality. As Odysseus tries to make his way home after the battle of Troy his curious personality makes him take multiple stops causing him to face multiple obstacles and end up cursed forcing multiple significant events to occur.

As the epic’s idol, he displays the combination of a clever, handsome, and courageous man popular among the mortals as well as the gods. Essentially, he embodies the ideals of the ancient Greek culture, being adorned with many favored characteristics of the era. However, an intriguing aspect of Odysseus lies in his personality. As the protagonist, he does not manifest the entirety of a stereotypical hero because Odysseus has a fatal flaw—his arrogance.
Pride often leads to someone’s downfall - this idea has been developed from the playwright “Oedipus the king” through Rey’s interactive oral presentation. He discussed that Oedipus’ excessive pride over his knowledge due to solving riddles allows him to not listen to others including the respected Prophet , his dear relative Kreon - he seldom pays heed to them and decides to pursue further for searching the predecessor’s murderer . His own path opens up hidden , dark truth about his life. From the presentation it has been evident that Oedipus was not smart enough to realize that the path he set for himself, will eventually bring nothing but pain.
