In the Odyssey, the most important trait that is exhibited by Odysseus is intelligence. When Odysseus was curious to see what the Cyclops were like, he took his crew to the Cyclops’ home. They ended up in the cave of Polyphemus, which is Poseidon’s one-eyed monster son. Odysseus and his men had to find a way out before he ate them all. “If I killed him we perished there as well, for we could never move his ponderous doorway slab aside.” ( Homer 902 ) Odysseus decided that he would get Polyphemus drunk on wine. When he was finally asleep, four of his strongest men and him used a pike of olive to blind him. By blinding him, Polyphemus could still open the door for Odysseus and his crew to escape. At the time, when Odysseus was offering Polyphemus wine, Polyphemus was asking Odysseus what his name was so he could give him a gift in return for the wine. …show more content…

After, when Odysseus stabbed Polyphemus’ eye, Polyphemus set up a howl to tell the other Cyclops that he needed help. All the Cyclops were worried about him so they asked him if someone had tricked him. “Nohbdy, Nohbdy’s tricked me. Nohbdy’s ruined me!”( Homer 905 ) The Cyclops thought that Nobody was doing him any harm so they went away. Polyphemus just sat their in pain all night, while Odysseus was filled with laughter and overjoyed that his plan had worked.
