In the Odyssey , Unit 1 had one male protagonists. That was Odysseus. The female characters were Penelope, Athena, and Circe played important roles in the stories. Their actions, their part in the story, and their traits shows that they are essential to the plot of the stories and the development of the character Odysseus. The main female character in this unit is Penelope. Penelope is Odysseus’s wife. Odysseus is the male protagonist in the story. Penelope was left behind by Odysseus to take care of things for 20 years. Odysseus left 20 years earlier and has never returned home. Penelope stays home and spends most of her days in the palace and waiting for her husband to come home. Penelope has one son that she had with Odysseus. The name of her son is Telemachus. Athena tries to aid Odysseus through his journey and return home. Athena is the character in the “Odyssey” that helps and motivates other characters, When Odysseus returns home Athena gives him ideas to help him figure out what is going in his home since he has been gone for so long. One of the ideas was acting as a beggar to get information. Doing that he will see who has remained loyal to him since he has been gone. Athena shows that she is caring for her friends.
