Argos the Wasted Life In Greek Mythology Argos, the dog of Odysseus, has been put through many problems while Odysseus is away. He gets treated poorly and has a long lonely life, but dies a happy dog. Even though he had a life without a friend or master he still pulled through to live a long life. He had great training, but his master had to leave him behind. So, Argos was alone and waited for his master's return. In the painting, Argus Recognizes Odysseus, Theodor Van Thulden uses the love Argos has for Odysseus to show that everything has something to live for, while in his poem “Argus”, Alexander Pope uses the same scene to show that there is always that one thing that makes your life complete. This explains that dogs were rare where Odysseus lived, and Argos was one of the first dogs. But after war when Odysseus returns home, he finds his old dog, Argos, old and beat down (Loki). So while Odysseus was away Argos was getting very old. So instead of his aggressive, tough, hard working dog, Odysseus finds an old, rough, weak dog (Loki). “Argos recognizes Odysseus instantly, but has no strength to get up and can only drop his ears and wag his tail” (Loki). Argos as an old weak dog recognizes his master who is disguised as an old man. Argos is so weak he can’t go to his master and greet him. In an excerpt from Alexander Pope’s poem, “Argus”, he says “longing to behold his ancient lord again. Him when he saw he rose, and crawl’d to meet, and frawn’d and kiss’d his feet” (Pope). Argos wasn’t strong enough to stand up and love on his master. All he could do was lay by his feet licking his master. Another excerpt from Pope’s poem says “Seiz’d with dumb joy; then falling by his side, Own’d his returning lord, look’d up and died!” (Pope).
