In both stories, The Odyssey and The Searcher, the two main characters are war heroes. Odysseus and Ethan both contributed in war and returned home far later than expected. In addition, both stories are about quest to find someone. There are many similarities between the stories, but none greater that the two main characters. Both Ethan and Odysseus are arrogant and think very highly of themselves and will use inferior, naive people for their benefit. The narcissistic and selfish ways of the two characters hold them back in the long run. Ethan’s cocky ego is shown on multiple occasions. For example, he doesn’t listen to people because he thinks he is superior. A prime display of this is when he would not take orders from the minister, Captain Samuel Clayton, and thus got kicked out of the Texas Rangers. Another example is when he paid the store owner to tell him where the girls were, then uses Martin as bait, and proceeds to kill Mr. Fudderman in self-defense. This hurts Ethan in the future because when he needs help from the Rangers, they refuse since he abandoned them and has been charged with murder of the store owner. They both will not take orders because they feel this way, and also, they were war leaders and command troops to different results. Odysseus and Ethan will never admit to being wrong and refuse to apologize for their actions and misjudgments, hurting them when trying to accomplish their goals of reaching their sought after destination. Ethan and Odysseus will use people to gain what they need and often do act in their own self-interest, as opposed to what is most beneficial to the welfare of the group. Ethan and Odysseus both think too highly of themselves, and had they been more generous and modest, they would have been more
