There are many themes in both O Brother where Art Thou and the Odyssey which seem to be strongly similar. Many similarities between the characters and their actions surface through their actions. In my essay I will not only compare and contrast the most important elements of the mentioned works, but will also discuss the importance of heroic figures and the less favored themes, such as revenge and foolish fearlessness. It is important to note that both works are taken place during hard times. Odysseus’ journey is dated around 1200 BCE, or the ‘Dark Age’.

Odysseus, the main character, is a brave man that battles monsters, mortals, gods, and goddesses to see his wife in Ithica once more. Throughout the story, Odysseus faces the death of his crew, the sacrifice of innocent lives, and the loyalty of family and kin. But he is not the only one struggling under brute conditions.

He expects to arrive at his home, Ithaca, safely to reunite with his wife, Penelope, but unfortunately faces many temptations and setbacks. Due to the challenges he faces, it prevents him from arriving home as early as he thought he would.
“The Odyssey,” by Homer, outlines the journey of Odysseus after the Trojan War. Odysseus is the king of Ithaca, who is summoned to fight in the Trojan War as a fine leader. The “Hero’s Journey” represents the path, usually taken by the hero of a story, of personal change and accomplishment. Odysseus from “The Odyssey” goes through this journey throughout the epic because many features from the “Hero’s Journey” are portrayed in “The Odyssey.” A few major milestones in the hero’s journey are the Call to Adventure, the Tests and Supreme Ordeals, and the Master of the Two Worlds.

The main character Odysseus is an dynamic character who undergoes many changes throughout his journey getting home. This tale has 3 parts to it, one where Odysseus leaves his wife and children in Ithaca to go to the war, two Odysseus’s journey to his destination and three being when Odysseus regains power back at his household and restores his life back by killing all the suitors. In the epic story the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from the Trojan war, and on his way home he finds many obstacles ahead of him. Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.

Homer reveals that mortality is necessary for a good life when Odysseus denies the opportunity for immortality that Calypso offers, he shows the significance of honor in his description of Odysseus’ bravery in the Trojan war and the consequent respect that Odysseus’ crew has for him, Homer reinforces the importance of hospitality in each city Odysseus travels to, and he conveys that experiences, good or bad, define a good life. The Greeks held their gods in high esteem and therefore when Homer or other characters in the epic refer to Odysseus as being “godlike,” this is one of the highest compliments he could receive.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, protagonist Odysseus faces many challenges throughout his journey from Troy to Ithaca, where he is king. Perhaps one of the most taxing and gruesome obstacles that Odysseus faces, which nearly compromises his return to Ithaca, is Odysseus’ encounter with Polyphemus, the Cyclops son of Poseidon, god of the sea. This encounter is significant because it portrays the contrast between civilized and uncivilized, explores the risks and consequences of temptation, and ultimately reveals Odysseus’ desire for glory.
