In the play Oedipus Rex, Oedipus and his brother-in-law Creon drive the main conflict of the play. This essay will explain the similarities and differences between the tragic hero, Oedipus, and his brother-in-law, Creon. Even though they both have power, Oedipus and Creon have similar and different characteristics to each other. Oedipus and Creon are both headstrong and difficult to deal with, yet they are also very different. Oedipus is known as the King of Thebes and shows that he is charismatic towards the people. Creon displays his power as the political type and is very manipulative towards others. Creon is also a conniving sneak who tries to manipulate Oedipus and the people of Thebes into believing some nonsense to cover his tracks of trying to overthrow Oedipus as king. Both Oedipus and Creon display a sneaky side of themselves in the play, showing how similar they are. Considering Oedipus is supposedly charismatic to the people, he lacks wisdom and does not consider the consequences of his actions or realize what is coming toward him. Even though he is the sneaky politician type, Creon shows how wise he can be and is very cautious, which stands out in contrast to Oedipus. Oedipus is the kind who cares more about the people by being straightforward with them about everything going on in Thebes. He does this that way, the people know that they can trust him as he is the tragic hero of this play. As Creon plots his way to overthrow Oedipus as king, he bends the truth a little and starts hiding things from Oedipus as he is showing his conniving political side of things.
