Edge goes on in the next line to talk about how less of a man he felt when the soldiers helped him. “But having to be saved by those white boys made me feel just as low as those other white boys had seen me.”

Authors commonly like to contribute clues and hints throughout their stories to give the reader an indication of a future event. This is called foreshadowing. Foreshadowing can incorporate meaning, suspense, and tension throughout a novel, making the reader more intrigued and eager to know what will happen later on in the story. W.W. Jacobs creates suspense and tension throughout “The Monkey’s Paw” through the use of this writing technique to add to the reading experience. For instance, in paragraphs 18 and 19 from “The Monkey’s Paw” when the Sergeant-Major Morris is asked the question “What was that you started telling me the other day about a monkey’s paw or something, Morris?” by Mr. White, Morris hurriedly replied saying “Nothing’’.
So the story is that all of the man in the black regiment had to receive less pay only because of their race even if there are laws saying that you can get equal pay, but the government is still giving the order for all of the African Americans to be paid a lower wage. So the regiment made a protest to not receive less pay than the white ones so they rip the papers up and started to yell a chant of not doing that. When the chants continued on all of the white officers, including Captain Shaw ripped up the checks too. So the whole regiment, including the whites is starting to have love for their fellow man so at this moment in time the change is in the air and the different cultures, one oppressed and one the bully and the oppressor are starting to get along in the world does not look so bad anymore. This is going to be a big part in the history of race relations in the civil war era of America because of President Abraham Lincoln’s laws to have to do with abolishing slavery and having freedom.
In the story, “The Monkey’s Paw”, the White’s acquire a monkey’s paw from an old friend. The friend reveals that the paw is considered magic and then gives it to the Whites, starting a chain of events that brings sorrow to the family. One of the guests, Mrs. Merriweather conversates with another guest, Gertrude, “‘there's one thing I [Mrs. Merriweather] truly believe, Gertrude,’ she continued, ‘but some people just don't see it my way. If we just let them know we forgive 'em, that we've forgotten it, then this whole thing’ll blow over’” (310). Mrs. Merriweather is concerned of how people will see the case in her perspective and points out that the Whites of Maycomb have forgiven the misconduct from a Black man. However, Harper Lee reveals the way the Americans view the Africans even when have no real need to be pardoned when it was never them at fault.
In the book "The Monkey's Paw", story element s such as character, setting, and plot all contribute to the theme. The theme of the book is "be careful what you wish for". This is the theme because in the book, the monkey's paw is a magical item that grants the user three wishes, but at great consequences. We know this because in paragraph 26 sergeant-major Morris says "put a spell on it so that three separate men could each have three wishes from it".
A simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another used to make a description more emphatic or vivid. By using similes in a story the reader can help enhance the author's message in different ways. In the stories “The Monkey’s Paw” by W. W. Jacobs and “Canyons” by Gary Paulsen the authors use similes to help the reader visualize the setting and characters. In the short story “The Monkey’s Paw”, similes are used to help the readers visualize many things throughout the story.
In the story “The Monkey’s Paw” the theme is don’t mess with fate and this story elements like character, setting, and plot all help contribute to the theme. The character’s emotions, reaction, and actions are a significant role in revealing the theme. The setting, though not realized as much actually shapes the story too. As normal, plot most definitely contributes to the theme. The character’s reaction contributes to the theme.
To have a great story, it has to make use of literary elements to give detail and depth to a story. Stories can leave a feeling or thought that can make the reader think about what they just read. Making use of literary elements can help give hints to what the story is gonna be about or what is going to happen in the future. The four stories that our class read use these two elements and a few of the stories can almost tell the entire story just in the first two pages. Two of the most well used literary elements is symbolism and foreshadowing.
