Emotions in humans are what separates us from any other species in the world. While animals have their instincts which determine the actions they do, humans uniquely are controlled by feelings. Feelings can be very contrasting, they can fill us up with positive energy, or make us feel as if we are worthless. The intensity of feelings can be dangerous in certain situations if they become out of control and are not properly managed. This is most common in the feeling of love because it is the most intense emotion we experience. This essay is going to prove how the contrast between the feelings of loneliness and love directly leads to jealousy and insecurity.

Her father had kept her cut off from society. Emily finds a new sense of love and connection when she gets involved with Homer Barron, a man from the North who works in her community. However, Emily's desire to hold onto this connection leads her to extreme measures, ultimately resulting in Homer's death. Emily's jealousy and insecurity stem from her fear of losing the security that Homer provided her. In her mind, killing him was the only way to be sure that he would never leave her. The murder Emily committed seemed shocking to the reader, but if you look deeply into the text it becomes less surprising. This short story is based on a conversation the four characters have sitting around a table, which discusses their past experiences with love. Mel, one of the characters, becomes jealous and insecure when he hears the story of Terri's ex-boyfriend, Ed. Mel’s anger is justified because of the abuse Terri’s ex-boyfriend put her through. Ed abused Terri in their relationship and claimed his abuse was out of love. Also, When Mel and Terri first began dating, Ed would harass both of them. Ed’s distress led him to kill himself because he couldn’t be with Terri. The torture Terri went through destroyed a correct image of what love is from ever forming in her mind. Terri loved Ed and because of that love, she told the group that is what she believed true love was. The thought of Terri believing that Ed truly loved her upset the group, but it mainly upset Mel. Mel immediately disagrees with Terri and by doing this he in a way is being like Ed. He restricts her from having a belief that Ed also loved her and made it clear she did not have a correct view of what love is, even though he could not make a convincing view of what love is.
