In the book Of Mice and Men By John Steinbeck loneliness is very significant and a major theme. Many characters are very lonely and some of them try to look for an alternative way of life. The characters are isolated by particular features such as sex, age, disability, and race. Each is essential trapped by their situation and they are unable to help each other to escape loneliness they have. Also, to escape their own fate they have of their own. Also, some of the characters deal with their loneliness by searching for companionship with others on the ranch and it works differently for each of them in ways, One example of loneliness comes from the character Crooks when he says suppose you didn't have nobody. “Suppose you couldn't go into a bunk house and play rummy because your black. How’d you like that Sure you could play horseshoe till it got dark, and suppose you had to read books”. Books ain't no good a guy need someone to bear. This statement illustrates not only his reveals his loneliness and isolation, this shows theme of friendship and camaraderie. In this quote right here Candy pretty much gives pretty much gives us a definition of loneliness from his point of view. That if someone who does not ask questions or listen to others in other worlds and someone who does not communicate a lot. Candy is someone that does not communicate a lot he is a old man with a bad back and has a hand that is broken.
