Re: The Closing of the (North) American Mind Dear publisher, This letter is regarding a provocative essay, titled “The Closing of the (North) American Mind,” by Robert Nielsen where he reviewed a book by American philosopher Allan Bloom. The article discussed a lot about the aims of education beyond high schools. Some elaborate ideas were presented, but not all are to be agreed upon. Firstly, Robert talked about “Futile propaganda,” the way this was addressed certainly shows insufficient first-hand experience. Robert says, “These prompt children to talk about abortion, sexism, and the arms race, “issues the significance of which they cannot possibly understand.”” To talk about a group of people without actually knowing their mindset and assuming that they are not mature enough to understand a subject. Also, to further more talk about how they lack experience and passion shows just how much Mr. Bloom himself lacks compassion, because if the youth of today do not discuss mature subjects they will, like he said lack passion about it later in life. Bloom as he talks about how, “Such “openness,” actually leads to closed minds because it makes students incurious about real distinctions between good and bad,” Later on Robert also says, “Thus young Americans are taught to be apologetic instead of proud of a political heritage.” I believe such “openness” has actually led students to prosper and move on rather peacefully, looking back at our history there have been undeniable acts of close minded conflicts with no real motive whatsoever. Also, young Americans being taught to be apologetic is to an extent true, because again if we go look into our history we can see how lands were plundered by those superior and not only plundered but ravaged.
