In literature, characters’ names are often used as symbols for ideas, personalities, or roles in the story. A name can often influence one’s character and background amongst other people. Summers has connotations of happiness and freedom. Mr. Summers is generally pretty cheerful. Old Man Warner proves that Mr. Summers is a very cheerful person when he says it’s, “Bad enough to see young Joe Summers up there joking with everybody,” (Jackson 3). Warner implies that Summers’ characteristic happiness is inappropriate for such an event. . Old Man Warner directs the reader 's mind towards a grumpy, yet experienced character, the opposite of Mr. Summers’ name connotation.
