The Alchemist Essay In Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, a young shepherd boy by the name of Santiago is forced to use nature to guide him through his journey. To illustrate this one may consider the other characters that Santiago meets on his journey, every character that Santiago met taught him something new that he can use for the future of his journey. In addition, Santiago used the omens which represented nature as well, due to omens being physical or spiritual, helping Santiago make decisions while on this journey. Finally, Santiago had to figure out his Personal Legend, as for if he did not figure it out, then his journey would make no sense in the end and he wouldn’t be able to make it to the end of his journey in the first place. Some of these characters would be the old king Melchizedek, the Gypsy, the Crystal Merchant, the Alchemist, the Englishman, and Fatima. All these characters help Santiago to keep striving to achieve his goal of treasure. Fatima helped Santiago start the journey, the Gypsy confirmed his dream to help him make his decision of going on such a journey, the old king helped Santiago to keep looking, even after the road got tough for Santiago. The Alchemist would be one of the main supporting characters in this novel due to the fact that the Alchemist was the one who guided Santiago onto another path which took him straight back home to the treasure, helping him realize the true Personal Legend that he achieved. His personal legend was the main reason why Santiago made it to the end of his journey. His personal legend was finding the truth about the treasure; finding the true treasure, but he did not know this until we drew closer to the end of his journey. Santiago wouldn't have found the physical treasure or even have found out the true treasure without the help of all the other characters, a character who had a main part of helping Santiago find his true treasure was the Alchemist, who gave Santiago a lecture about himself having the same dream that Santiago did, and redirecting Santiago back to the abandoned church where it all started. After travelling back and digging up the treasure after a long journey, Santiago discovers that without the help of everybody that he met on his journey, he wouldn't have made it to where he was in the first place; given knowledge about the world that he lives on and giving him the opportunity to find treasure. As a result, Santiago made it to the end of his journey with the success of finding the treasure, also finding true treasure, and learning that he fulfilled his personal legend due to the assistance and conversations of other characters in this
