Within the allegorical novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding symbolically lays out the social prejudices and morés of intelligence, order, general kindness and brutality. The book continues to be relevant today. When choosing a leader, society focuses on how he/she looks and what he/she says. If someone says just what people want to hear and is rather good looking, it’s very likely that person will be chosen as leader. Piggy is representative of intelligence within society.
It’s common for some works of literature to improve upon their writing by sustained allusions to myths, the bible, or other literature references. In “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, Ken Kesey makes use of frequent allusions from the bible. Because of this, McMurphy, the main character, is painted as a Christ-like figure.

McMurphy helping the patients overcome their fear of Nurse Ratched and her power and control over the ward. Throughout the book, Kesey uses animal imagery to depict the personalities and behaviors of Nurse Ratched, McMurphy, and the patients. Nurse Ratched is a wolf, and she thrives off of her overbearing control over the patients in the ward and enjoys having everything conform to her set of rules.
To survive, rescue is the first thing that pops into mind, not constant brawling. The Lord of the Flies is a novel about a group of boys who were involved in a plane crash. The crash had no adult survivors, so its up to the boys to form some sort of government and find a way to get off of the island. William Golding uses Piggy’s glasses, darkness, and a creature named the beast to convey the boys to savagery, and lead the fight for power. Piggy’s glasses are mentioned all throughout the novel, a symbol of clarity, keeping Piggy from digressing to the savagery the others had due to him seeing more clearly, but others seem to be far more primitive.

McMurphy is not like Chief, nor any of the other patients for that matter, for he is a man who refuses to follow the wards rules and does whatever it takes in the book to strip the head nurse, Miss Ratched, of her power, in a fight for the patients, sovereignty within the ward. “Shells” by Cynthia Rylant is a short story that is realistic fiction about a boy named Michael, who lives with his Aunt Esther after the death of his parents. In the beginning, Michael and Aunt Esther fight with one another. Soon, Michael brought home a hermit crab named Sluggo. Michael and Aunt Esther start to make a good effort to fix their broken relationship with one another mainly over the crabs. In the end, Aunt Esther and Michael now have a good bond and apologized for fighting with one another.

In William Golding’s classic novel Lord of the Flies the characters Sam and Eric are very civil characters who makes the decision to “go with the flow” from the moment the plane crashes to the moment the boys are rescued. Throughout the book, these twins struggle to decide which of the two leaders to follow. In the end it seems that Samneric leave Ralph’s civil tribe and join Jack’s savage tribe. However, Samneric never change their beliefs.

Piggy, a 12 year old boy who is very intelligent but suffered with the physical attributes in life. Piggy suffers from Asthma and has trouble athletically in physical activities. Piggy believes that his intelligence can positively effect the decisions being made on the island, dwells and reasons on the things other characters want to do in the novel, and rejects the others telling him to shut up, by stating his opinions in important situations which effects the novel positively.

Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies there are many quotes that can be applied to life in general. Intelligent but young , Ralph says, “ The thing is- fear can’t hurt you any more than a dream” (82). Behind this quote lies tremendous amounts of meaning; this quote can be applied to any ones life. Ralph, who did not realize at the time, told the children that they are only making themselves scared and there is actually nothing to be afraid of- in their case, the beast.
