Open campus high school helps improve student behavior. “Research shows that teen drug use and other dangerous behavior is highest between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. - the unsupervised hours between the end of school day and the time parents get home from work” (Merino 89). The mistakes or little flaws of a few students should not affect the students who did not do anything wrong (Saslow). At Frankfort High School some city school leaders hope that reviving open campus will better connect students with their community (Schanding). Open campus is not a matter of closing opening the campus (Saslow). Frankfort High school believes that the ultimate goal of open campus is to provide students with the real-world skill sets (Schanding). In that case talking about maturing students and teaching responsibility so that they will be ready for college or adult life (Schanding). “We want it to be a little more structured. Students will be accountable, Barber said. We know there are logistics and there has to be steps worked out...but it all starts with the concept of allowing students to have freedom and independence in the lunchtime” (Schanding). Having open campus High School allows the students to make their own independent choices. (Saslow). Making these independent choices as a High School student is extremely important for kids as they grow older, it makes students more responsible as young adults (Saslow). Allowing the students open campus could in fact give them a chance to go home, and take drugs, but the truth is half of the students most likely would not spend their time that way (Merino 88). Some schools believe that they should not allow open campus due to them being about five miles at least away from the nearest restaurant, being further away from a restaurant means that students can become more experienced at driving (Schanding). There are many schools that believe that if they allow open campus their students will go home and sneak into their parents alcohol cabinet, but teachers and parents are going to have to allow some freedom or else the students would not be able to prove/ gain trust (Saslow). “Safety is of the utmost important to us, so the option to leave was removed at the Glen Burnie High School”, but most kids would most likely try to stay safe (Nwabuzo). Parents who are at work would probably like to know that their kids are safe and at school not out getting food or at home doing bad actions, although most kids are not as bad as most parents or teachers think (Saslow). People believe that there is a lack of discipline and that kids have too much free time, and that open campus just simply will not help kids achieve the best education possible, but not allowing open campus could also make students feel claustrophobic/stressed out (Saslow).
