History open day
At my school they decided to host an open evening in November 2013. The evening was open to both students and parents. The primary purpose of this open day was to allow prospective GCSE students to sample a wide variety of historical periods and to also see what GCSE history would entail. The two main tasks I had to complete were organizing the open evening and hosting the open evening. Organizing the evening fell under the branch of creativity and hosting the event came under the branch of service. My school has close connections with a multitude of schools in Kerala, south west India. The aim of the visit was to take gifts and donations to our partner school and for an orphanage, but also to try and establish a connection with another local school. Fundraising was a big part of this trip. Even though flying to India would be rather expensive, we were set on fundraising as much money as we so we could give the best educational gifts for the schools and orphanage and the largest donations. During the summer we were given the task of fundraising £100 individually. While this is not the largest sum of money, it was quite difficult as many of us had no experience fundraising. We all successfully managed to raise it however. I personally chose to host a raffle, putting together a hamper filled with lots of items and then selling raffle tickets to local people and businesses around our school, many of whom were happy to help once they found out the cause. The cost of the trip was just over £1000 per person, we all paid £300 towards the trip and then we raised at least £100 each, leaving a minimum of £600 still to be raised per person, plus money on top for gifts and donations. To raise this we all decided to split of into smaller groups and do various events to raise more money. Due to the success of the raffle, the group i was in decided to repeat this around the school. This was more successful that we had anticipated and we managed to raise a large sum of money toward the final amount. However when he had all finished in our small groups we did still needed more money if we were to give generously, so we decided to contact a local supermarket to see if we could arrange a bag packing session, where we would pack peoples shopping for them and many of them would leave a small donation.
