The case study I will be observing will be a Netflix TV Show called Orange is the New Black. In this show, I will be observing the representation of women, stereotypes and the representation of prison and on how it affects the society and how it differs from reality. A stereotype is used to categorize a group of people. People don't understand that type of person, so they put them into classifications, thinking that everyone who is that needs to be like that, or anyone who acts like their classifications is one. For instance, in the show Orange is the New Black, there are stereotypes of races e.g. black, Mexicans, white, gay, transsexual and many more. As a society, people have categorized people in the way they think they should be. This show looks differently into different making the society believe that prison is exactly how the show is like. Looking into this show, the casts vary, having different races, genders and sexuality in the show. Exploring into these aspects of the show, it all differs to reality due to them being treated differently in prison. Orange is the new black starts off humanizing the prisoners first as how their life was like at first before turning into criminals, then displays that they are criminal’s seconds. Being in the prison slightly dehumanizes the criminal since they have no identity by either calling them ‘inmates’ or their second name. This shows that the impact of prison has a bad side due to what they have caused. Orange is the new Black is very ironic to real life prisons and jails. Usually, prison and jail have a limited skill activities and resources, not hygienic. Orange is the new Black gives prison another image and representation to how it is presented and
