The person who I chose is Oskar Schindler. He saved thousands of Jews from murder. He was born in 1908 in a province of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. He worked as a businessman. Schindler was working for the Nazi party when he saved about twelve-hundred Jews from the Holocaust. He had many flaws like excessive drinking and womanizing, but to many eyes, he is a hero. Although Oskar Schindler may be seen as a traitor or a cheater, he rescued innocent people from death, which makes him a true hero. Oskar Schindler was born on April 28, 1908 in Moravia. Schindler had many occupations including a farming assistant, a lance corporal, and a German businessman. However, he was the most successful as a wartime profiteer. At his peak, he had about 1,750 workers under his employment, and one thousand of them were Jewish. Overtime, his daily interactions with them caused him to gain relationships with many Jews. In February 1939, Schindler did the unthinkable. He saved 1,200 Jews from deportation to Auschwitz, Nazi Germany’s largest killing center. He took those Jews and himself to Krakow, Poland and bought about four businesses. One of the businesses that he purchased was an enamelware manufacturing factory in which he hired all of the Jews that he saved. He also took some of the Jews to Buenos Aires. Because of his actions, he was awarded with some prestigious honors. In 1963, he was honored by the state of Israel as Righteous Among the Nation, which is an award given to non Jews who helped save Jews during the Holocaust. In 1993, he was presented with the Museum’s Medal of Remembrance from the United States Holocaust Memorial Council.
