The movie “Schindler’s list” is a fascinating, real-life depiction of the events that occurred during World War II. It illustrates the persecution and hair-raising killings of the Jewish people. It also exemplifies the hope and will of the Jewish people, which undoubtedly is a factor in the survival of their race. The most important factor however is the willingness of one man, Oskar Schindler, to stand out and make a difference for these people. Approximately 6 million Jews became the victims of this fanatical racism, slaughter, and cruelty. He was an open member of the Nazi party, a womanizer, a gambler, an alcoholic, and was extremely money hungry, but was successfully able to rescue and save from death over twelve hundred Jewish men and women. His closest friend and accountant, Itzhak Stern, was shown as signal of hope and a future for all of Schindler’s Jewish workers. Itzhak always makes sure that Oskar is being taken care of and Itzhak is very grateful for Oskar letting him into his life. One can tell that Itzhak is Oskar’s favorite because when deportation was happening, Oskar “made Goeth promise to put in a good word for [Itzhak]. Nothing bad is going to happen to [Itzhak] there, [he will] receive special treatment”(1:09-1:15). He does believe that Oskar can save the Jews, and continues to say "whoever saves one life, saves the world entire"(1:37-1:39). From a World History in Context article, the editor Barry Keith Grant explains that “enfolded within this story, images of deportation and death camps give the backdrop of the cataclysmic events that surrounded Schindler’s Jews”(Grant 225). Schindler’s List, directed by Steven Spielberg, is one of the most realistic movies to show the gruesome shock of the concentration camps and torture of Jews. Never the good, always the bad. Even in the midst the devastation of a national genocide, where one race turned against another in hate, good people existed and worked to counteract the hate through love and compassion. Oskar Schindler was one of these people. World War II provided him the means to become a very wealthy and powerful man, yet he did not exploit the Jews like many other businessmen during his time.
