SECTION 1
Osteoporosis is a condition of fragile bones that occurs when the body loses too much bone or makes too little bone. Bone may breaks from a fall or in some serious cases, from sneezing and minor bumps. According to the 1993 Consensus Development Conference, osteoporosis was defined as a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration to fractures (Anonymous, 1993).
Based on statistic given by International Osteoporosis Foundation, in the worldwide stage, osteoporosis causes more than 8.9 million fractures annually, resulting in an osteoporotic fracture every 3 seconds. 200 million women worldwide are estimated to have osteoporosis where 1 in 3 women over age 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures. Almost 75% of hip, spine and distal forearm fractures occur among 65 years old or over.
Prevalence of osteoporosis stated by IOF is about 25% of hip fracture occur in men and the range of mortality is about 25% in the first 12 months after hip fracture.

In other words, osteoporosis is not diagnosed until there is a fracture. As stated in Mayo Clinic, once the bones have been diagnosed by osteoporosis, the signs and symptoms include back pain which is caused by a fracture or collapsed vertebra, loss of height over the time, a stooped posture and a bone fracture will occurs much more easily than expected. Usually, osteoporosis develops slowly over the year and after a certain amount of bone loss, a bone fracture after a minor injury as a fall may occur. For example, if a person have osteoporosis, the force of a simple fall to the ground like from the height of a standard chair is usually enough to fracture a bone. Normally, a simple fall to the ground like that does not cause a fracture in normal person who have a healthy bone. A bone fracture after a minor injury like this is known as a fragility
