Being Aware of Calcium and Vitamin D Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease that people around the world hear about. As of right now, everyone is at risk of getting osteoporosis. But, how could one prevent him/herself from getting this disease? Well, the answer lies within the amount of vitamin D and calcium that a person would consume each day. But, how important is this being discussed between physicians and their patients? Both vitamin D and calcium can either be taken by diet or by supplement. There are guidelines that recommend how much calcium intake a person must have according to their gender, life stage, and from what region they live in. However, only increasing calcium intake is not sufficient enough to maintain the proper bone mass. A proper amount of vitamin D is needed for optimal intestinal calcium absorption (Chan). But, older Asian females are not getting enough vitamin D into their system despite this being evident that this is a factor of being diagnosed with osteoporosis. With this information, a study was created to show how physicians and patients stress the importance of being aware of the function of both vitamin D and calcium. I do not like to drink soda as much, and if I do, I only drink it once or twice per year for some occasion and usually could not finish the entire drink. So, I am not concerned that this is a risk factor for me. But, I do need to pay attention and calculate how much I take into my diet carefully in order to suit my needs to stay healthy as my father and my aunt. I also need to put in some more weight bearing exercise like my younger sister to make my bones stay in top shape so that chances of me being diagnosed with osteoporosis would be
