The whole statement about us being controlled by our food and the people who produce our food is absolutely absurd. Wendell Berry’s article claims our freedom has been taken away from these food companies who make the food we buy and consume. I personally disagree with him because we are not forced to buy the items these companies sell to us. Our meats, vegetables, and fruits are obviously under genetic engineering and mutation. But if you do not want to buy these items, you do not have to. People can grow their fruits and vegetables and raise their own sources of meat to be sure they do not have any harmful chemicals or are mutated. These companies such as “Tyson” or “Foster Farms” do not control us or our state of mind. The organic foods might be on the more expensive side, but it’s healthier for you and people won’t go around saying that you are controlled by the food system. People are not forced to buy these unhealthy, gross food items these companies sell. No one is pointing a gun at their head or a knife at their throat pressuring them to purchase this stuff. I feel like I am an extremely healthy person. I eat meat, but I work out and play sports. Sure, there are people who are a little chubby and Berry might say those are the types of people who are “controlled” by the food system, but the reality is that they are just lazy. Also, just because they are wider, does not mean they spend every second of each day thinking about food. We do need food in order to survive, but I feel just because you buy the type of meat you want to buy, no one controls you. Sure, you might see a few commercials and advertisements on these products, but you do not go buy them because that company manipulated you into buying them. You just buy them because you feel like it and if you wanted to change your choices of meats you
