“About forty percent of food produced in the United States isn’t eaten” ( Food Network) Easily half of this product have minor imperfections or shape deformities preventing them from being sold. They are completely safe for consumption. This is mainly due to the American mindset of perfection in the food bought. If Americans could change their mindset more food could be easily sold. I believe Americans can be vastly benefiting from buying blemished or deformed food.
Some Americans have noticed how much food is wasted because of minuscule cuts or bruises. With the creation of companies like Imperfect produce, people can buy abnormally shaped or lightly blemished good food for a dramatically lower cost than they would in grocery stores. The amount of food wasted equals six-billion pounds of produce. If half of that is minorly imperfect that is three-billion pounds a year of food that could be sold or donated to feeding the hungry. (CBS Evening News) Granted food with imperfections may not sell very well overseas or they may not last as long as the products at a normal grocery store. However, the blemished goods should be sold in the United States of America and the unblemished goods can be sold elsewhere.
The foods sent away are often less appealing but better in terms of taste and texture. An example of these products is better is on the youtube video called “Imperfect Produce| Ugly Fruits and Veggies, and why they’re so fabulous” uploaded by the channel Sophie Uliano. In the video, Sophie Uliano is shown cutting an orange from the store and a larger “ugly” orange. The ugly orange was described as having more juice and a sweeter taste. When purchasing the deformed foods it’s easy to get a smaller or larger product but most of the time it will be a better
