Local Sustainable Food Chains

Why is this hamburger green? Well, unhealthy cows, mixed with loads of chemicals, and unsustainable living circumstances causes that green burger. There are four food chains established by Michael Pollan, an American author who specializes in the agriculture and food industry. These four food chains are Industrial, Industrial Organic, Local Sustainable, and Hunter-Gatherer. These food chains have different qualities that make them better than one and another but Local Sustainable is far beyond quality food. So, the best food chain to feed the United States is most definitely, the Local Sustainable food chain because the animals that become human food are well raised, the food stays extremely close to the farm, and there is a strong connection …show more content…

This is important because most people do not know where their food is coming from, the condition of the building that the food was made, and most importantly who made the food, like Joel Salatin questioned Michael Pollan, “Don’t you find it odd that people will put more work into choosing their mechanic or house contractor than they will into choosing the person who grows their food?”(Pollan 117). This points out a very important point, most Americans buy the first carton of eggs that they find, the first gallon of milk, even the first bag of chips, not only does this happen but also the cheapest food is bought first. Many do not pay attention to the fact that the food they are eating is coming from far away. For example, peas from Europe are grown in Kenya, the crab caught in Seattle is sent to China then sent back, even chocolate waffles are imported and exported from Great Britain. (Pollan 120). To support the idea that a close relationship between the farmer and consumer is important, “Getting their food from Polyface lets them feel connected to their food--these customers know exactly where their food comes from” (Pollan 117). This shows that people can feel connected to their food, helping it feel more natural to the consumers and not foreign. Not only …show more content…

The claim is that consumers should not be buying a package of eggs for $3.45 when they can buy the same eggs for $.99. Well, that's what is wrong with the society, we want what is cheap and fast, not necessarily whether or not it is better for us. The Industrial chain puts out fast food that is terrible for the body, and uses lots of poisonous chemicals to make the food look and taste “Good.” What the consumers also do not see in Industrial food chain supermarkets is that most of the popular chains failed to achieve decent grades for fresh food, and reducing the amount of food wasted. Over 165.6 billion dollars was wasted over the surplus of foods, and 40% of food was thrown out for being old and modeling(USDA). That cheap package of eggs was pumped with chemicals and is horrendous for the body. The Americans should not settle for decent food but for eximious food. A second claim is that the food is very inconvenient. Well, that is another issue with the food industry, consumers buy food on whether or not it is convenient. Like when someone pulls over and buy a hamburger from one of the 10 Mcdonald's near their home or job for a $1, they bought it because it was quick and convenient. Most would not go to a farmers market and buy fresh meat and make their own hamburgers or go to a family owned, natural restaurant to get a bite to eat. Sometimes to get the
