Our Lady of Victories, Catholic Church Glenelg was established on the 20th November 1927 after the foundations being laid earlier in 1926. This church was proposed as the new Roman Catholic Church of St Mary’s, located in High street, Glenelg. The first Catholics arrived in Australia in the first fleet in 1788, these Catholics were predominately Irish convicts. The protestant St Paul’s Lutheran Church Glenelg was established in 1961 after the hall was built and used for worship on site in 1954. An additional ‘Martin Luther House’ was purchased later in 1978 which is used for Sunday school, community care and offices for the pastor and secretary. Lutherans first arrived to Australia in 1830 with Pastor August Kavel.

Both of these Christian denomination’s beliefs are included in the Apostles creed and recited regularly. The apostles creed is an early statement of Christian beliefs, creeds and symbols. The Apostles creed is widely used in Christian denominations and includes a list of 12 beliefs. These 12 beliefs include “1. I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. 2. And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord. 3. Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary. 4. Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell. 5. The third day he rose again from the dead. 6. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. 7. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. 8. I believe in the Holy Ghost. 9. Amen.” The Catholic church spends time praying to Mary and she is symbolised in the Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church, however Lutherans do not pray to Mary and Mary is not shown in the St Paul 's Lutheran church. Whereas a number of the traditional disagreements and separation is now being addressed in the recent and more contemporary undertaking of Ecumenicalism. Ecumenicalism is the cooperation and promoting a better understanding between varied religious denominations. Both denominations work in together to find similarities and a common ground. Each denomination including the Catholic and Lutheran church work towards a united ministry of service to the local and wider community. The Lutheran Church is very people based and offers a range of activities for the community of all ages to participate in. Activities the Lutheran church promotes include youth services and camps, ‘messy church’ activities for children and home church for the elderly and unwell. The Catholic church has a very welcoming atmosphere to it. This church offers a food and donations basket for the community and encourages members of the community to ‘get involved’.
